The South African Mining Qualifications Authority will hold a Mining Skills Conference in late February to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Time:2026-02-11

The South African industry education and training body—the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA)—announced that it will host the 2025-2026 Mining Skills Lekgotla from February 26 to 27 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng Province. This conference will provide the MQA with a formal platform to report on its performance to various stakeholders and facilitate exchanges around key industry priorities. The conference will also guide the development of skills-renewal and enhancement programs that align with future workplace demands, strengthening the MQA’s ability to respond effectively to stakeholders’ identified training needs and ensuring that both employed workers and unemployed youth acquire practical skills relevant to the evolving mining industry. This biennial Mining Skills Conference coincides with the 30th anniversary of the MQA’s establishment, and its theme is “30 Years of Excellence in Skills Development—Building Empowered Mining Skills for the Future.” Dr. Nomusa Zethu Khunta, the newly appointed Chairperson of the MQA, along with the newly appointed members of the Board of Directors and committees (who will serve during the 2030 NSDP term), will also attend this conference.

The South African industry education and training body—the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA)—announced that the 2025-2026 Mining Skills Lekgotla will be held from February 26 to 27 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng Province.

This conference will provide MQA with a formal platform to report its performance to various stakeholders, engage in exchanges around key industry priorities, and build a dialogue bridge to address the challenges and opportunities impacting skills development in the mining and mineral sectors. The conference is expected to achieve three major outcomes: strengthening collaboration among stakeholders, deepening the industry’s understanding of automation and digitalization, and identifying entrepreneurial initiatives that support mining community development and youth employment.
In addition, the conference will also guide the development of skills-renewal and enhancement programs that align with future workplace demands, strengthening MQA’s ability to respond effectively to the identified training needs of stakeholders and ensuring that enterprise employees and unemployed youth acquire practical skills that are relevant to industry developments.
On the first day of the conference, there will be a plenary session, keynote speeches, panel discussions focusing on current and future issues, a career guidance expo, and an evening gala honoring achievements in the mining and mineral industries. On the second day, the focus will be on gathering feedback from the panel discussions, continuing exchanges on the identified key priorities, and maintaining the career guidance expo.
This career guidance fair is specifically designed for high school students from disadvantaged communities. It will be held concurrently with the main conference and, over the course of two days, will benefit numerous students while also promoting career development pathways in the mining and mineral industries. The fair will feature interactive sessions, mentorship opportunities, and relevant advisory services to help students make informed decisions about pursuing careers in the mining sector.
This biennial Mining Skills Conference coincides with the 30th anniversary of the MQA’s establishment. The conference’s theme is “30 Years on the Path to Excellence in Skills Development—Building Together Empowered Mining Skills for the Future.” The conference will celebrate this significant milestone, showcase achievements in the field of skills development, and highlight the MQA’s pivotal role in implementing the National Skills Development Program (NSDP).
The newly appointed MQA Chairperson, Dr. Nomusa Zethu Khunta, as well as the newly appointed members of the Board of Directors and committees (who will serve during the 2030 NSDP term), will also attend this conference.
