Turkey's scrap steel import market prices remain stable.

Time:2026-02-25

At the start of the week of February 23, Turkish steel producers remained largely inactive in the deep-sea scrap steel import market, as sales of finished steel products weakened during the Ramadan period, resulting in subdued trading activity. This week, the benchmark import prices for scrap steel are as follows: The CFR Turkey reference price for U.S.-origin HMS 1&2 (80:20) blended scrap steel is USD 374.47 per ton; the CFR Turkey reference price for the same specification of scrap steel originating from Northern Europe stands at USD 369.69 per ton. The price differential between U.S. and European sources thus remains at USD 4.78 per ton. On the domestic market, the delivered price for automotive bale scrap steel is between 15,700 and 17,050 Turkish liras per ton, while the delivered price for ship-breaking melted scrap steel ranges from USD 350 to USD 360 per ton—both unchanged from the previous week.

At the start of the week of February 23, Turkish steel producers remained largely inactive in the deep-sea scrap steel import market, with trading activity subdued, influenced by weak sales of finished steel products during the Ramadan period. This week, the benchmark import prices for mainstream scrap steel are as follows: The CFR Turkey reference price for U.S.-origin HMS 1&2 (80:20) mixed scrap steel is USD 374.47 per ton; the CFR Turkey reference price for the same specification of scrap steel originating from Northern Europe is USD 369.69 per ton. The price differential between U.S. and European sources remains at USD 4.78 per ton. In the domestic market, the delivered price for automotive bale scrap steel stands at TL 15,700–17,050 per ton, while the delivered price for ship-breaking melted scrap steel is USD 350–360 per ton—both unchanged from the previous week.
Last Thursday (February 19), the latest deep-sea transactions were recorded: A steel mill in the Izmir region placed an order for U.S. HMS 1&2 (80:20) scrap at $375 per ton (CFR), and also ordered shredded scrap and bonus scrap at $395 per ton (CFR). Another steel mill in the Marmara region procured similar U.S. resources at the same prices. On the same day, yet another steel mill in Izmir placed an order for Baltic HMS 1&2 (80:20) scrap at $372 per ton (CFR). As of this week, with no new deep-sea transactions concluded, the scrap steel price index has remained stable.
Market participants report that Turkey entered the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan late last week, and steel trade typically slows down during this period. Currently, domestic steel transactions are extremely light. Although steel mills in the Izmir region have maintained their ex-factory prices for threaded steel—including tax—at 28,300 lira per ton, it is reported that a leading steel mill in the Marmara region has lowered its ex-factory quote—excluding tax—to $550 per ton, a reduction of $5 per ton. Some steel mill officials pointed out that, with scrap steel prices remaining unchanged, steel mills continue to operate at a loss.
