Ukrainian Railways’ scrap steel sales surged 220% in the first quarter, poised to set a new annual record.

In early 2026, Ukrainian Railways significantly accelerated the pace of its scrap steel sales through domestic auctions. According to data from the Prozorro.Sales platform, the company’s average monthly scrap steel sales in the first quarter reached a record 21,600 tonnes, compared with an average of just 9,950 tonnes per month from May to December 2025—a 217% increase. The explanation for this trend is straightforward: Ukrainian Railways and the major scrap steel consumers—Ukrainian steelmakers—have agreed on mutually beneficial terms for standard scrap steel purchase-and-sale contracts and raw-material pricing, thereby finding common ground.

In early 2026, Ukrainian Railways significantly accelerated the pace of its scrap steel auction sales on the domestic market. According to data from the Prozorro.Sales platform, the company’s average monthly scrap steel sales in the first quarter reached a record 21,600 tonnes, compared with an average of just 9,950 tonnes per month from May to December 2025—a 217% increase.

The explanation for this trend is straightforward: Ukrainian Railways and the major scrap steel consumers—Ukrainian steelmakers—have reached a win-win agreement on the terms of standard scrap steel purchase and sale contracts and on raw material pricing, thereby finding common ground.

Although the process of aligning positions and reaching compromises extended into January and February of this year, it did not prevent Ukrainian Railways from successfully selling 64,700 tonnes of scrap steel—out of a total of 92,600 tonnes listed on the Prozorro.Sales platform—during that period, achieving an auction success rate of 70%. This marks the highest record since the company fully transitioned to selling raw materials through Prozorro.

Given that Ukrainian Railways sold only 79,600 tonnes of scrap steel for the entire year of 2025, the volume of raw materials it sold in the first quarter of 2026 has already nearly matched last year’s full-year total. This suggests that Ukrainian Railways is on track to meet its scrap steel sales target for the first time this year, while also helping to alleviate Ukraine’s scrap steel shortage.
