2026 Statistics: South Africa’s February Mining Output Up 9.7% Year on Year

According to data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the country’s mining output rose 9.7% year on year in February 2026. Platinum-group metals, chromite, manganese ore, and gold made the largest contributions to this growth, while iron ore and coal were the main drag. On a seasonally adjusted basis, mining output increased 2.3% year on year in February, following a 3.7% month-on-month rise in January and a 2.1% month-on-month decline in December. However, on a quarterly basis, mining output for the three months ending February fell 1.7% compared with the previous period, with iron ore and platinum-group metals weighing most heavily on the result, while manganese ore provided the strongest positive support.

Seasonally adjusted mining output rose 2.3% year on year in February, following a 3.7% month-on-month increase in January and a 2.1% month-on-month decline in December. On a quarterly basis, however, mining output for the three months ending February fell 1.7% from the previous period, with iron ore and platinum-group metals accounting for the largest negative contributions, while manganese ore provided the strongest positive support.
In terms of mineral product sales, at current prices, February sales surged by 58.3% year on year, primarily driven by gold, platinum-group metals, and chromite; “other” non-metallic minerals and manganese ore, however, were the main negative contributors.
Seasonally adjusted sales of mineral products rose 9.4% month-on-month in February, following an 8% decline in January and a 21.8% increase in December. Over the three months ending February, sales were up 17.5% from the preceding period.
