According to the memorandum, the Uzbek Metallurgical Combine plans to procure 300,000 tonnes of direct-reduced iron from Tajikistan, with deliveries scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2027. Signed on the eve of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon’s visit to Uzbekistan, the memorandum is expected to enhance the Uzbek Metallurgical Combine’s raw-material supply and further deepen industrial integration between the two countries.
Construction of the Tajik Metallurgical Joint Venture commenced in April 2025. Located in the Bobojon Gafurov District of Sughd Province in northern Tajikistan, the iron-ore mining and beneficiation enterprise is situated near a deposit with estimated reserves of approximately 60 million tonnes of iron ore. According to projections, once the project is commissioned, it will be capable of mining and processing 2.5 million tonnes of ore annually and producing 1.1 million tonnes of concentrate.
The first phase of the joint venture is scheduled to begin operations in 2027, creating 1,200 jobs; full-capacity production is expected by 2031, at which point more than 2,000 jobs will be generated. In December last year, the Government of Tajikistan signed an investment agreement with the Tajik Metallurgical Joint Venture on the construction and commissioning of the enterprise, which will be developed and built with local investment and whose output will be primarily destined for export.
According to local media outlet SugdPress, citing the Sughd Regional Government, approximately 50% of Phase I of the project had been completed as of January this year. More than 800 experts have been involved in construction and equipment installation across 15 project sections.
Previously, the Uzbek Metallurgical Combine secured a €132.5 million loan to complete the construction of a casting and rolling complex.
