Canada’s First Quantum Minerals Partners with Hitachi to Deploy the World’s First Fully Electric Mining Truck at a Zambian Mine

Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals (FQM), in collaboration with Hitachi Construction Machinery, has commissioned the world’s first ultra-large electric mining truck at the Kansanshi copper–gold mine in Zambia, marking a significant breakthrough in the electrification of mining haulage and the transition to low-carbon operations.
This equipment is a fully electric Hitachi EH4000 mining truck, which, leveraging advanced battery technology and an overhead-wire auxiliary system, was officially put into operation on April 16. FQM stated that this move will help improve energy efficiency, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The Zambian Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development stated that the project is of great significance to national development, as the adoption of clean energy will drive the mining sector toward sustainable practices and enhance Zambia’s standing in the global green mining industry.
Tristan Pascall, CEO of FQM, noted that the project is the result of long-term collaboration among mining companies, equipment suppliers, and the government, leveraging Zambia’s abundant hydropower resources to create favorable conditions for low-emission mining. Moreover, the electrification of mine haulage offers significant economic benefits in the current context of volatile energy prices.
The project also provides local employees with opportunities to participate in the operation of electric haul trucks and overhead line systems, thereby helping to cultivate talent in cutting-edge technologies. FQM stated that approximately 96% of its workforce is Zambian, and the project will further enhance local technical capabilities.
Hitachi Construction Machinery stated that the project has validated the potential of electrified mining transportation in terms of safety, durability, and commercial viability, while also serving as a demonstration for future wider adoption.
Overall, this project demonstrates the ability of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, and governments to collaborate in driving technological innovation, thereby providing a crucial pathway toward the development of green mining.
