From January to May 2025, Russia, Malaysia, Algeria, Vietnam, and India were Turkey’s main sources of slab imports. In the same period of 2026, the top three remained unchanged, yet purchases from these major suppliers declined markedly. Russia retained its position as the largest supplier with 698,059 tonnes, despite a year-on-year drop of 23.7%; imports from Malaysia fell by 50% to 204,344 tonnes; and those from Algeria decreased by 23.3% to 169,224 tonnes. By contrast, imports from Vietnam surged by 99.9% to 100,450 tonnes, while Libya— which had recorded no imports during the same period last year—entered the rankings with 65,242 tonnes. Notably, imports from India were absent this year. Overall, Turkey’s total slab imports declined by 22.3% year on year, primarily due to reduced purchases from its major suppliers, with increases from sources such as Vietnam and Libya proving insufficient to offset this decline.
