Weak overseas demand has led to a consolidation in Japan’s scrap steel export price range.

Overseas demand remains weak, and Japanese scrap steel export prices have stabilized. As of the week ending May 26, Japanese scrap steel export prices remained steady, with both buyers and sellers adopting a wait-and-see approach. This week’s key export price assessments are as follows: H2-grade scrap at FOB Japan’s major ports is quoted at JPY 55,000–55,500 per tonne, unchanged from last week; shredded scrap is priced at JPY 57,500–58,500 per tonne, holding steady for the second consecutive week; and heavy scrap and newly cut scrap are both quoted at JPY 59,500–60,500 per tonne, remaining stable since May 13.

In the export market, purchasing appetite at major destinations remains constrained. Vietnamese steel mills have scaled back scrap imports ahead of the rainy season; recently, deep‑sea HMS 1&2 (80:20) prices settled $5 per ton lower on a week‑over‑week basis, at $398–$400 per ton CFR. Bangladeshi offers have followed suit, with most mills suspending new purchases in anticipation of the Eid al-Adha holiday (May 25–31) and the onset of the rainy season. Taiwanese steelmakers, amid persistently weak rebar and construction demand, are in no hurry to replenish their scrap inventories. South Korea has emerged as an unexpected exception: with limited domestic supply, it returned to the import market last weekend to procure high‑grade scrap.

On the spot export front, H2 scrap is quoted at USD 420 per ton CFR to Bangladesh, equivalent to approximately JPY 57,000 per ton FOB; to Vietnam, the CFR quote stands at USD 395–400 per ton, translating to roughly JPY 55,000–56,000 per ton FOB, with offers as low as USD 390 per ton CFR. For crushed scrap, the CFR quote to Vietnam is USD 415–420 per ton, or about JPY 58,000–59,000 per ton FOB; to Taiwan, the CFR quote is USD 406–410 per ton, though buyer activity remains subdued. Heavy scrap and newly cut scrap are quoted at USD 420 per ton CFR to Taiwan and USD 430–440 per ton CFR to Vietnam, corresponding to roughly JPY 61,000–62,500 per ton FOB, with buyers generally offering around JPY 59,500–60,500 per ton FOB.
